1957-1959 Trained as stonemason in Düren, Germany
1959-1961 Apprentice at the Dombauhütte in Cologne, Germany. Studies with the sculptor Ludwig Gies at the Kölner Werkkunstschule.
1963-1968 Sculptor at Nörvenich near Düren: Portraits and figures in stone. Large works made from wooden beams 1966-67. In the last year at Nörvenich he made his first stone sculptures with the cleaving and reassembly method.
1969-1975 Shared a studio with the artist Blinky Palermo in Mönchengladbach, Germany; steel sculptures were made during this period
1972 Participation at documenta 5; solo exhibition at Paula Cooper Gallery, New York

Exhibitions

Ulrich Rückriem is a major sculptor of his generation and has shown widely in Europe and the USA. He has been included in Documenta 5, 7, 8 and 9 and represented Germany at the 1978 Venice Biennale. His work is represented in major private and public collections in the US and Europe, including the Tate Gallery London, National Gallery Berlin, Moderna Musee Stockholm, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Kunstmuseum, Bonn, Museum Ludwig, Cologne; the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide. His work was included in the 1982 Sydney Biennale.
